Grand daughter posing summer 1998
Coming off top. I put plenty of camber on this curve.
Used the first ton of rail. While waiting for next ton we took turns to drive Romulus over the top & back, always easier in reverse.
Through assembly shop to workshop.

Track Laying. Spring a length of rail to the curve required & hold in place with iron rods.Dig a trench 19" x 3" deep & place the sleepers in 9" between centres, lay the rails (30x12mm bar) in the grooves, the track is kept in gauge with 10mm holes drilled in rails & threaded bar through, 3 per 6m length on the straight & 5 on curves. Having joined 2 or 3 lengths together using 25x3mm angle iron as fish plates replace some of the soil between the sleepers & pack up to the rails, this will need repeating after running engines for a while. After some time you can sow grass seed & mow over the track.
Having removed the rail dig the trench.Laying sleepers & placing rail in grooves.
Chopping roots, This is hard work. Tree on left caused endless trouble, in the end I destroyed it.Tamping the soil with daughters assistance.
Track laying on front.Up from the gate.

Chopping channel for rails.

I replaced 9 sleepers just after laying, a truck ran over them before they had time to settle. They are the only ones changed in over 12 years.
